Alamieyeseigha Pardon: Church, Activists Drag Jonathan To UN

 

World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) and Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) have dragged the Federal Government to the United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR) expressing “serious concerns about the state pardon granted former Bayelsa State Governor, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha by President Goodluck Jonathan.”
The groups said they “consider this to be entirely inconsistent with the country’s international human rights and anticorruption commitments, and the promises made by the government of Nigeria to the United Nations during its Universal Periodic Review in 2009.”
The complaint was submitted to the UN as part of an update to the submission made by the groups to the UPR this month.

Nelson Mandela back in hospital with lung infection

A statement from the South African presidency said Mr Mandela, 94, had been admitted just before midnight.
Mr Mandela spent 18 days in hospital in December undergoing treatment for a lung infection and gallstones.

He is widely regarded as the father of the nation for leading the struggle against apartheid.
Mr Mandela served as South Africa's first black president from 1994 to 1999. However, his health has caused concern for some time.

A presidential spokesman told the BBC that Mr Mandela was conscious and was receiving the best possible medical treatment.

"I think we need to be clear that the doctors are attending to Madiba [Mr Mandela] on a continuous basis," spokesman Mac Maharaj said.

"They prefer to act on the side of caution, and the moment they felt there was a recurrence of the lung infection, they felt that it warranted immediate hospitalisation given his age and given his history."

ON Friday 8th March 2013 Nigeria Racing Eagle officially unveiled its drivers at the impressive London’s west-end venue VANILLA. The drivers who would be competing alongside other teams at the British GT Series for the 2013 season are ex Formula One Red Bull test driver Adrian Zaugg and Paris based Christian Ebong. There was a short presentation from the Team Principal Ribi Adeshokan, who emphasised on the need for Africa to be represented in motorsport, the TV hosting rights for the series to be shown all across Africa and the sponsorship opportunities for businesses based in Africa and those internationally.

The Nigeria version of “An Evening with Racing Eagle Nigeria” Event is scheduled to hold in Lagos and Abuja in April 2013.

JTF Conducts House To House Search In Kano

There was serious confusion in the Eastern Bye Pass area of Kano early on Monday when security agents under the Joint Task force, JTF, arrived the area to conduct a house-to-house search.
A resident of the area, said the security agents were conducting the search ostensibly to fish out members of the Boko Haram sect.
“They have been here since morning, searching for insurgents and weapons,” he said.
He added that the agents may have a point in conducting the search there because it has lately became notorious for incessant attacks.
A security source said that the security agents are convinced that most of the insurgents operating in Kano reside around the area.

Former IGP, Hafiz Ringim seeks asylum in the UK

 

A former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Hafiz Ringim, is allegedly seeking asylum in the United Kingdom, as reports say, he has an application before the UK Border Agency.
Dailypost learnt that not long after his sack on January 25, 2012, Ringim traveled to the UK and has not returned ever since.
Sources say his request is on the grounds that the dreaded islamic sect, Boko Haram, may target his life once he returns to Nigeria.
The former Police boss in his application informed UK officials that he narrowly escaped death inJune 2011, when the Force Headquarters in Nigeria’s capital city of Abuja was bombed, few days after he threatened to crush the terrorist group.

An octogenarian says she turned to begging to protest against government’s neglect of the aged.

The woman, Mrs. Sabitu Bakare, 83, who hails from Ake in Abeokuta, Ogun State, also told Punch Metro that she deliberately chose to beg in Lagos State, where begging had been outlawed, so that she could be arrested and be made to face the law.

She added that she hoped to advise the state Governor, Babatunde Fashola, on how to take care of the elderly in the society and also pay good salaries to workers in the state.

Bakare is a mother of nine children, seven of whom had died.

Nokia and Google have clashed over software that is part of free-to-use video encoding technology.

Google wants its video coding program, called VP8, to be a core part of the WebM project that is making web-centred video production tools.
But Nokia says it owns key patents that define parts of VP8 and has filed an official objection to Google's plan.
Nokia said it filed the objection to stop Google's software replacing more open alternatives.
'Unusual step' The independent WebM project was started to create video production and playback software specifically designed for use online.

Zambia's ex-President Rupiah Banda denies corruption charges against him.

Zambia's former President Rupiah Banda has been arrested in connection with a Nigerian oil deal, officials say.

He is accused of stealing more than $11m (£7m) during his three years in office, Reuters news agency reports.
Mr Banda who was stripped of presidential immunity earlier this month, was questioned for nearly three hours before being freed on bail.

Prior to the official start of the long-awaited Mobile Number Portability service, the Nigerian Communications Commission has listed roles expected of stakeholders, particularly telecoms subscribers, towards making it work.

While service providers and the regulator are getting set to roll out the service, the NCC said certain important roles were expected from the subscribers using the over 113 million active telephone lines in the country and who might want to port their numbers.

The Interconnect Clearing House, which has been appointed by the NCC to create a unified interface billing system, is currently rounding off the exercise by bringing service provider networks on the mobile number portability platform.

3 Children Dead Over Water Pollution In Bayelsa

 

THREE teenagers have died in Lotugbene community in Bayelsa State after allegedly drinking water from a river polluted by the rig operation of an oil company in the area.

The affected children, Osumayin Eniye, 7 years; Kpegbolo Oyadonbenfa, 5 years and Boroyegha, 10 years, supposedly died of cholera after vomiting and stooling for a while.

The river is the only source of drinking water to the community.

Irate chiefs, elders and youth leaders of the community have consequently handed down a seven-day ultimatum to the company to quit the area.
